Vowed scrapping of Roe 8 project if WA Labor elected

If WA Labor wins the March election, they have vowed to scrap the controversial Roe 8 and Perth Freight Link projects.

The Roe 8 contract that was recently signed would be renegotiated immediately upon Labor forming government, stated opposition leader Mark McGowan. This would free up $1.7 billion in funding for what it regarded as more worthy “congestion busting” projects.

"Roe 8 is a highway to nowhere. It is a monumental waste of taxpayers' money. An economic and financial disaster," he said.

"I have written to contractors this morning to advise them of the fact we will not be proceeding if elected. It comes on top of a letter sent in December advising them we may well arrive at this position."

He said Labor got written advice from lawyer and former solicitor-general of WA, Grand Donaldson, indicating that ending the Roe 8 contract following the election would only have a "modest" cost to the state.
